A wonderful mid-century Matisse by Renoir “Apple” brooch, crafted in copper with rich ruby-red enamel accented by black vertical striping. The stylized apple is framed by sweeping copper curves and finished with an elegant stem and two openwork leaves.
Signed “MATISSE © RENOIR” on the reverse. Renoir introduced the Matisse line in 1952 for its enamel-on-copper jewelry; pieces with the copyright mark date from after 1954. The Apple design is documented in specialist references as a striped enamel-and-copper brooch of about 2½ inches.
